Sometimes, one simple conversation can lead to something amazing.
Last year, Molly, an individual supported by ViaQuest Day & Employment Services (VDES) Toledo, shared a wish with her Service and Support Administrator (SSA). She wanted to spend a day at a splash pad.
But there was a problem.
Because Molly uses a wheelchair for mobility, visiting a splash pad wasn’t as simple as showing up. Most splash pads didn’t have the equipment she needed, like a shower chair or transfer lift, to safely enjoy the water.
Instead of letting that dream end there, people listened.
Turning a Challenge into Change
Molly’s story inspired action.
The Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities partnered with the City of Toledo to create a fully accessible splash pad at James Farr Park. The new splash pad includes equipment that helps people who use wheelchairs safely enjoy the space, making it possible for more families and individuals to cool off and have fun together.
It’s a great example of what can happen when a community works together to make sure everyone is included.
A Day Worth Celebrating
When the splash pad opened, Molly’s friends from ViaQuest Day & Employment Services Toledo were there to celebrate with her.
Seeing Molly enjoy the splash pad she had dreamed about was a special moment for everyone. It was also a reminder that accessibility is about more than ramps and equipment—it’s about giving people the chance to participate, make memories, and enjoy their community alongside everyone else.
